Hayes Carll and Roky Erickson to represent Texas at Nelsonville Music Fest 2012

Looking forward to seeing many artists this year that I haven’t seen before or was all those I am familiar with, but the must see, and since I’ve been stuck in the Texas Singer Songwriter genre for what seems like 36 months is Hayes Carll.  since seeing him at Canal St back in June 2009. I’m also getting up to speed with Roky Erickson, founding member of the 13th Floor Elevators and a pioneer of the psychedelic rock genre.  I watched the Documentary, You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone

I’ve  listened to a couple spins of his new album and read some concert reviews of shows in New Zealand and Australia.  If your going to Nelsonville, watch this documentary on Netflix.  His will be an intersing set to say the least…here’s the rest of the lineup.

My Morning Shuffle

an epic shuffle this morning…

Blues Traveler-Letter from a friend- was lucky to be friends with JR who turned me on to BT  back in 1990.  saw  em play the Newport in Columbus with Widespread Panic opening.  Who would a thought then what an epic show in such an intimate setting.

Marshall Tucker Band- If that isn’t Love- Caught MTB several times back in the day, most memorably at the August 82 Willie Nelson picnic at the old Legend Valley

On July 25, 1982, Legend Valley brought Alabama, Hank Williams Jr., Juice Newton and A Touch of Grass. Later that year in August, Legend Valley hosted Willie Nelson, Marshall Tucker Band, Leon Russell, Ricky Scaggs and the Wright Brothers. One thing that made Legend Valley stand out from other venues was that they allowed and encouraged coolers and picnic baskets to be brought in the valley.

next up in the shuffle was Gov’t Mule live from the Warfield Theater in San Fram 9-26-09…I was lucky enough to score a ticket to this show on the  end of a weekend in with Shan Sutton. The song was DOn’t Let It Bring You Down and featured Jackie Greene and Grace Potter…This video is from the night before

and lastly in the morning shuffle was our our Doyle Wright, Host of Down Home Bluegrass on WYSO…I ran into Doyle at the WYSO Silent Auction last month, he invited me back to co host an upcoming show, we are working on dates for me to join Doyle in the WYSO studios again soon.

What was next in the shuffle you ask? it was Gloria Gaynor I will Survive, I’ll prolly skip that tomorrow and see what come next.

My Favorite T-Shirt soon to be back on my back

we $pent Sunday morning in Yellow Springs, Brunch at the Winds, bought some bumper stickers, some pottery and clothing.  In particular, we ran into Robert Paschell aka improbable Bob and just like last time, http://degenhartfamily.com/?p=63 , he did not have one on hand, so I paid him $15 and wrote my name and address in his spiral bound notebook.  Now I sit back and wait a week or so.  It will certainly arrive in time for my next outing to a large music gathering where fiddles will be prominent.

Visit Roberts T-Shirts online http://www.improbablebob.netfirms.com/t-shirts6.html or catch him weekends on the street in Yellow Springs next to Trail Tavern.

Homestead House Party w/ Patrick Sweany Tonight

The evening will start at 7, come on in, grab a table, park your cooler and mingle around a bit.  music will start at eight with Patrick playing two sets.

a couple housekeeping notes to mention. Smokers, please enjoy the lawn areas away from the house and refrain from littering.  As you know this is a cooler friendly show, which means you can tote in a cooler of beer, pop, liqueur and mix. You can also pack some wine and cheese and enjoy chilling out on the lawn and whatnot…I’m asking/requesting that whatever you bring in, please take it out. As you will see this is a super nice space and keeping our level of trash to a minimum will go a long way to support another event in the future. please keep all empty beer bottles, cans, cups, napkins and whatnot in your coolers and dispose of off site.

we’ll have floor mats placed around to keep the coolers off the hardwood floors to protect from moisture and or spills.

That’s about it, if you haven’t responded and still want to come, please shoot me an e-mail at rob.degenhart@gmail.com and we’ll add you to the guest list.

Reminder, Milanos Pizza, Bw-3 and The Pine Club are right across the street.  Deweys Pizza and Smash Buger are just down the street at Stewart and Brown and the infamous Kremers is just up Irving Ave.  a little further out is South Park Tavern on Wayne Ave.

So, there you have it, good friends, good music and good times…see everybody tonight

Patrick Sweany House Party Invite

DegenhartFamily.com is stoked to welcome Patrick Sweany to the Historic Patterson Homestead August 5th 2010 as part of the “Homestead House Party Series”  Doors at 7 Show at 8.

The Chicago Sun-Times says “Sweany seamlessly melds indie rock with blues, soul and Americana.” Patricks most recent albums, recorded on the Nine Mile Records label of Austin, Tx have been produced by Dan Aurbach of the Black Keys .

MOJO (UK) “New Blues Explosion! writes “His music has a loose, aggressive edge, but in his quieter moments, Sweany recalls the supple beauty of Ry Cooder’s 70s readings of Depression-era pop blues.”

The Homestead House Party is a semi-private show meaning, we’ll need RSVP’s since our seating is limited.  The Homestead Hall has great acoustics and is alcohol friendly.  This will be a BYOB show and coolers are welcome.

I’ll be posting up more details and RSVP info so check back, in the meantime, save the date 8-5-10 for a super evening of great music.

Did I mention this is a FREE show?

Any questions in the meantime, just shoot me a note at rob.degenhart@gmail.com

Thursday in NYC

Early on, the  plan  was to leave Thursday, but I knew we needed to stay in order to see the show.  Nobody was ready to go anyway. So Thursday starts out late.  Me, Bobby and Jack hit the 6 train to 86th and entered Central Park by the Guggenheim ’round 10:45am.

Walked the path by the Reservoir. Bobby was thirsty, Jack was hungry and I had to pee, we saw the Obelisk, threw snowballs at the Delacorte Theater, barged in on the 11am Swedish Cottage Marionette Show then had our way with the Belvedere Castle.

We mostly ignored  Teresa’s texts till we got one from a taxi, she needed a cross street for the Boat House.

As we walked through the park to meet mom, great wisdom was spoke, snowballs thrown, things marked and people pwned.

At the Boat House, Jack was apparently viciously attacked by a little dog, that I later saw and laughed out loud.  Teresa showed up and we head to the dining room without reservations, it is Restaurant Week.

I talk Bobby into the Tuna, Sirloin, and Cake. The Sea Urchin sauce w/ the tuna was like something Jeff Probst would serve.  I look over and Bobby is gagging in is cloth napkin, “are you gonna puke?” was answered with a no nod and Survivor style gulp.

The dessert was killer and at one point I was seriously pwned by the waiter, he didn’t know it, but Bobby and Jack wouldn’t let me forget it.

Accidentally passed the Alice in Wonderland statue on the way out.  Teresa, Bobby and Jack to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, me to the Davinnci’s  Workshop.

So back to the show, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck, opening dates Thursday and Friday, Madison Square Garden. Bought and printed tickets with help of the concierge @ Affinina 50 around 4:30 for a 7:30 show.

Short cab ride across town.

dropped off on 7th, Penn Station and Madison Square Garden at 6:30pm, lot’s of people, two story images of NBA and NHL players as we entered the Gardens.

Found our seats just next to stage, watched the Garden fill up, the guitar tech tune and play with Clapton’s guitars. Chatted it up with those sitting next to us.

Beck played for 45 minutes. We head up for a soda after the set, as we walk all they way to the concession area when Bobby says “Is Eric Clapton gonna rock as hard as Jeff Beck?” sadly, I knew the answer was no and reveled in the glory of the moment of my son just having his mind blown by a masterful musical performance in the famed MSG.  Here are the closing moments of Jeff Beck’s set shot from our seats on my iPhone.

Thanks Degenhart Family for a great Thursday February 19th, 2010  in NYC.

Just found this on an old memory card.  Looking west over Park Hills Crossing in Fairborn Ohio circa November 2009.  I’m not a conventionally spiritual individual.  I do however, humor myself with images of the Axis mundi

Jack Grace Band at Canal Street Tavern 5-14-10

Second night of a twenty something shows, coast to coast with Luther Wright.  An easy spot opening for The Spikedrivers,  Jack Grace on guitar, wife, Daria on bass, brought a genuine honky tonk outta Brooklyn NY to Canal Street Tavern in Dayton, Ohio tonight.  New York Press raves and calls him country and a Big Johnny Cash-style baritone singer but he ain’t country till I say he’s country, and he’s country.

Split Lip Rayfield @McGuffys Saturday Night May 15th

I’ve been talking these guys up for years, so I’m looking forward to seeing them again show this week at McGuffys House Of Draft where they’ll open the evenings show for Cracker and Reverend Horton Heat.

Doors at 7 Show at 8. If you’re not familiar with SLR and are going to this show, my advice is get there early and don’t miss these boys. They recently played some dates with Les Claypool. Here’s what TulsaToday.com had to say about SLR’s opening gig for Claypool:

Split Lip Rayfield’s 45-minute set undoubtedly shocked those unfamiliar with their work. Wayne Gottstine hammered on the mandolin harder than most metal bands grind the Axe, while Jeff Eaton slapped the gas-tank bass with hair a-flying in true head-banging fashion. Add those to the smooth banjo pickin’ of Eric Mardis and Split Lip Rayfield had the crowd eating out of the palms of their hands, particularly during the catchy “Kiss of Death” that tells the woes of how one unlucky motor vehicle owner has a knack for killing every car he drives.

Split Lip’s hard rock/ blue grass mixture gives the band a uniquely original sound that surprisingly works well played at a heavy metal pace.

As most of you know, I shoot video with a Cannon point and shoot,  quality is what it is and it only lets me shoot 180 seconds, that doesn’t seem to matter much as this little piece of “Kiss of Death” has been viewed almost 7,000 times.  This was SLR opening for the Supersuckers opening for Reverend Horton Heat back in December of 2005 at Newport Music Hall, Columbus, Ohio.

I’ll be out early Saturday night to catch Split Lip open what many will say will be an unbelievable evening of music.

no one changes a guitar string faster than Kirk Rundstrum.  rest is peace bro!

Will Catch a Lovell Sisters Set at Merle this week

They cover Blind Willie Johnsons In My Time Of Dying about as good as anybody.

Fairborn Rocks with Parkmoor Chicken!

What a night!  Fairborn had it’s annual Volunteer Dinner at the Senior Center. Katie Lewallen scored the mother of all catering with Parkmoor Chicken.  Stirred up lots of memories and was some of the best fried chicken I’ve had in a while.

An interesting thread on RealFood.com about Parkmoor Chicken Restaurants in and around Dayton back in the day.

Does anyone remember the Parkmoor Drive-In chain. We had several in Dayton, Ohio, where I grew up.

When the chain shut down, another restaurant … I think it was called Hail and Hearty … used the Parkmoor recipe.

Does anyone have that recipe? It’s a great taste from my childhood and the best chicken I’ve ever tasted!

Good to see 80 plus volunteers working hard for Fairborn….Thanks Katie!

Buffalo Killers – Hirsute Flannel Prog Rock @Canal St Tavern

Glad I popped in and caught Buffalo Killers Saturday night at Canal Street Tavern. The Dan Aurbach produced album further cements the state of Ohio as leader in original rock recording.
